| Updated May 13, 2015

Bear attacks and bad weather are making headlines all over the place and you definitely do NOT want any future headlines like that involving you on your RVing adventures!

That's why for this episode of the Roadtreking RV podcast we talk all about these two big potential pitfalls of RVing.

We start by addressing what people are doing wrong when it comes to bears, including getting too close to take pictures. We have a report from the National Park Service about how to enjoy bears without any trouble.

The majority of the show, however, is dedicated to dealing with bad weather, which is especially timely for the spring season. Mark Polk, of RV Education 101, joins Mike to talk about the dangers of severe weather and RVing. Among other things, they discuss:

  • How to drive when you suddenly encounter heavy winds
  • What safety equipment you should condider installing on your motorhome or the towing system for your travel trailer
  • Why an RV is no match for strong winds
  • Why you should not stay in the RV when a dangerous storm is approaching
  • The most common mistakes RVers make when encountering sever weather
  • The first question you should ask when checking into an RV park or campground
  • If storm-chasing TV shows are helpful or harmful when it comes to educating people about severe weather

We also talk tech tips and food storage while RVing on episode 35 of the Roadtreking RV podcast!

RV News of the Week: All About Bear Attacks and Bad Weather

Bear Attacks – A camper was killed over the weekend by a black bear in British Columbia, Canada. The man and his fiancee were camping in a small campground at the Parsnip River near Mackenzie, British Columbia. It appears the man killed was sleeping by a firepit and, after the overnight bear attack, was discovered the next morning by the fiancee who had been sleeping nearby in the couple's RV. The bear was found and killed. (Read more)

Meanwhile, at least two videos have been circulating showing what some say are charging, overly aggressive bears. One was in Yellowstone National Park and shows a mother black bear and her three cubs trapped on a highway bridge by camper-touting tourists. She and the cubs are noticeable stressed, unable to easily escape off the bridge. Tourists were way too close.  http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/watch-tourists-run-bears-yellowstone-national-park-n356516

The other incident actually happened last summer in Canada but was getting lots of social media traction this week. Two runners were followed by a black bear. The video claims they were stalked but it appeared to be a bear that was looking for a handout. It didn't seem aggressive or hostile at all but got way too close to them. https://youtu.be/9ifkzAdplwI

The National Parks Service has a great video on what to do when you encounter a bear that was done at Great Smokey Mountain National Park, offering tips such as not playing dead. We hear from a ranger- https://youtu.be/qZ9GzIMGRMw

Bad Weather – A devastating tornado wiped out an RV park in Oklahoma last week. You can see the story at this link: http://www.nbcnews.com/watch/nbc-news/tornado-destroys-oklahoma-rv-park-441353283923

Mike shares a clip of what happened when he was caught in his RV during a “land hurricane” a few years ago. A land hurricane, aka derecho, consists of massive, straight line winds that everyone thought was a tornado – https://youtu.be/n4mTtKsBJNw

Mike, Your comments about how to act when a bear is around were fine – for black bears. The advice from NPS for Grizzly bears is different, where you are supposed to play dead. That may well be what happened in Canada. The worng advice could threaten lives.
