10 Best Hiking Gear to Keep You Safe (Shopping List)

| Updated Jun 21, 2023

You know what they say, “Hope for the best. Plan for the worst.” This is the best hiking gear to keep you safe in case the worst happens…

You can see a lot from your RV, but there are some things you can only see (or truly enjoy) by foot. That’s why Jennifer and I love to hike during our travels.

While I never expect anything bad to happen when I hike, I like to prepare for a “just-in-case” scenario anyway. That way, I can enjoy the great outdoors and feel confident that I will be safe if anything unforeseen arises.

1. LEATHERMAN Signal Camping Multi-Tool

One thing that I never hike without is a multi-tool. These handy little devices are compact but have many tools that you might need in the great outdoors.

This model has 19 tools in one, including a cutting device, wire cutters, pliers, can opener, bottle opener, and diamond-coated sharpener.

Throwing this single tool in your bag can keep you prepared for almost anything that may come up on your hike.

2. JDYYICZ Waterproof Compass

This is the ultimate military compass for your next outing. Never get lost again!

In our GPS era, we rely a lot on our devices. But you never know when your battery or signal might run out. Carrying a compass that does not rely on battery use can be a lifesaver. Literally!

This compass comes with a luminous display so that you can use it any time of day.

It also has exact accuracy so that you will always know exactly where you are. Features include the North, location distance, orientation, and measured slopes.

The other great thing is its compact size, so it won’t take up a lot of room in your backpack. When folded it measures 3.34” x 2.48” x 1.18” in size.

3. Midland 22-Channel FRS Walkie Talkies

Walkie-talkies are great to have when hiking, especially if you hike with others that go at a different pace than you. That way, you can communicate when needed.

These two-way radios have 22-channels with a channel scanner. They also feature a long 24-mile communication range.

Feel free to charge them or use them with batteries. Having dual power options makes it convenient for you if you are camping without access to power.

4. X-PLORe GeaR Firestarter

Another gear item I always carry when I am hiking is a firestarter. That way, if I happen to get lost and need to find shelter and warmth, I can.

This device will help you start a fire under any conditions. It can literally save your life if you are hiking during a time of the year when the temperature drops significantly overnight.

This X-PLORe firestarter has a large magnesium rod and metal scraper that will withstand thousands of sparks and strikes.

5. Katadyn Hiker Pro Transparent Water Filter

This little device can turn any water into drinking water!

When you hike, you never think that an emergency will occur. But what if it does?

At the very least, I think every RVer should carry one of these in their rigs. But it’s also a good idea to keep one in your hiking pack, especially for longer treks and more isolated paths.

6. Hiker Hunger Outfitter Trekking Poles

These trekking poles can help you keep your balance when walking on uneven terrain.

Not only are they adjustable to your height, but they are also shock absorbent to help take pressure off of your joints.

They are also made from 100% Carbon Fiber, which means they are extremely lightweight but durable!

7. Paracord Bracelets

Another hiking item to consider is a paracord bracelet. These are essential survival tools that come with different gear attached to one bracelet.

This particular model has a high-quality compass, firestarter and scraper, and emergency whistle. It is also made from a highly-durable parachute cord.

Another nice thing about these bracelets is that they keep the tools on your wrist. That means your hands are free if you need them. And the tools are right there if you need them in a pinch!

Choose from 30 different colors. You can also adjust the bracelet to four different sizes so that it can fit anyone!

8. GOFORWILD Rechargeable Headlamps

One “must-have” when hiking is a headlamp. Sometimes hiking does not go as planned. You might intend on being back before sundown, but get turned around and arrive after dark.

You will need some sort of light to help keep you safe when you’re on the trail. These headlamps can help guide you home!

These lights are lightweight and can be easily thrown into your pack until you need them.

They are very bright, providing 500 lumens of chip-on-board (COB) light. In addition, you can choose from various modes: White COB, LED + White COB, Red COB, and Strobe.

9. Tilly Endurables Airflo Broadrim Hat

Did you know that the sun’s rays can go through your hair and burn your head? Then there are those of us who have thinning hair or bald heads that need even more protection!

When exposed to the elements you will want to protect your head as much as possible. The Tilly Endurable hat is made from 100% Supplex nylon and comes complete with a dual drawstring closure.

The best thing about this hat is the sun protection. It blocks 98% of harmful UVA/UVB radiation.

It also comes with a lifetime guarantee. Talk about durability!

10. Strike King Okeechobee Polarized Sunglasses

Every hiker should purchase a good pair of polarized sunglasses. That’s because polarized lenses have a special coating that can filter more light than other sunglasses.

When you hike, you never know when you might be exposed to the sunlight for hours on end. Not only do you want to protect your skin, but your eyes need to be sheltered as well.

The great thing about these glasses is that they are high-quality, but not expensive. They have plastic frames and come with polarized lenses that also have mirror coating. They are stylish and safe!

They also come in many different color choices so that you can find a style that is right for you.

Look up The Ten Essentials for hiking. You can Google it, or check The Seattle Mountaineer Web page to find it. No hiker should go any significant distance without the Ten Essentials. Your list includes many of them.
