1. Best Dog Harness Overall

Rabbitgoo Dog Harness

My favorite overall dog harness is the Rabbitgoo Dog Harness. It is versatile and designed with two leash rings for different types of walks.

Use the chest attachment clip to help prevent your dog from pulling on walks. Then use the back ring for casual walking, hiking or jogging!

The harness is easy to put on and off, featuring two easy-release buckles. It is also fully adjustable to fit your dog's body properly.

The harness is made comfortable with durable nylon. It is also padded to protect your pup's skin from irritation or rubbing.

The breathable mesh will help keep your dog cool on warm days. The Rabbitgoo also features reflective strips to keep you both safe on your walk.

2. Best for Camping

RUFFWEAR Front Range All-Day Adventure Harness

When camping, you want an easy-to-use yet tough, harness. The RUFFWEAR Front Range All-Day Adventure Harness is the right choice for that!

Not only does the harness offer extra padding to give your dog extra comfort. It also comes complete with two leash attachment points. One leash attachment point is a sturdy aluminum v-ring centered on the back.

The reinforced chest webbing helps it stand up against a strong puller, providing you with more control.

The RUFFWEAR harness is customizable, offering four points of adjustment. It also comes in different sizes, ranging from extra, extra small (XX-Small) to Large/Extra Large (L/XL).

While you are at it, choose from their selection of fun colors. From Red Sumac to Aurora Teal, you are sure to find your (or your dog's) favorite color.

3. Best for Hiking

RUFFWEAR Approach Dog Pack Backpack

The RUFFWEAR Approach Dog Pack Backpack is one of the best dog hiking harnesses you can find. That is because it comes complete with a trail-ready pack!

This harness allows your dog to carry his own gear for long days on the trail. Stash food, bowls, treats, dog poop baggies, and more in his harness.

It also has reflective trim to alert others of your presence. You can also purchase The Beacon (sold separately) and attach it to the light loop on the harness so you both stay safe when in low-light situations.

The RUFFWEAR Approach Dog Pack Backpack makes a very good hiking harness. It is the best choice for longer day hikes.

What to Look for in a Good Harness – 6 Things

Time to enjoy your hike.

Harnesses are a great option for dogs that tend to pull on walks. Harnesses have an ergonomic design that can help remove the tension placed on the dog's neck while pulling. They can also provide you with better leverage so you have more control over your pup.

When you want to find the best harness for your dog, there are a few different features that you will want to look for. Let's find the best dog harness for camping that works for both of you.

1. Comfortable Fit

While you want your dog's harness to have a snug fit, you do not want it to be too tight in places that may rub or become irritated. One harness may be great for a certain breed, but may not be the right fit for your dog.

Look for a harness that has adjustable straps so that you can adjust it to the perfect fit. Many harnesses come with both a chest and belly strap that can be changed to fit your dog. Having the right size for your pooch will not only feel better but will stay in place for that long hike.

Many harnesses also come in breathable material to help your dog's temperature stay regulated. It can also help prevent skin irritation underneath the material.

2. Padded Handle

If your harness comes with a matching dog leash, you may want to look for one that has a padded handle. A padded handle is more comfortable for you, especially on your outdoor adventure. It can also provide you with better control over man's best friend.

3. Durable Materials

When you're looking specifically to use a harness for camping, then durability matters. Everyday walk-around-the-neighborhood harnesses use less durable materials than the best dog harnesses for camping and hiking.

This is especially important for strong dogs that tend to pull on walks. They may put a high amount of pressure on the harness. One made from durable materials is less likely to break or get worn out quickly.

4. Reflective Trim

What features do you need?

Another good option to look for is reflective trim. If you walk your dog when it is dark and near moving vehicles, reflective trim can keep you both safe.

Drivers or other pedestrians will be able to see the light reflecting off your dog's harness. That will alert them to be careful when getting near you.

5. Quick Release Buckles

Look for a harness that offers quick-release buckles. This can make unsnapping your pooch's harness easier.

It can also help in an urgent situation. If you need to undo your pup's harness quickly to get them to safety, these buckles can help.

6. Leash Attachment Points

Check to see where the attachments are located.

Most harnesses offer leash attachments points in the same general vicinity. However, some harnesses offer multiple leash attachment points, usually one near the neck and one further back.

Depending on your dog's breed and how he pulls on the leash, one attachment may work better for you than the other.

An attachment closer to the neck will give you more control since it puts more pressure near the neck. However, if your dog tends to behave well and doesn't pull on the leash, then an attachment point further down is probably best. That's because it puts pressure more on the dog's chest than on the neck, making it more comfortable for your dog.

You'll probably even switch back and forth between the front and back leash attachments, depending on the situation and how much control you need at that time.

For casual walking I use the Easy Walk front hook harness for my crew. 2 labradoodles, a Portuguese Water dog and 2 small poodle mixes. When we travel and hike, I use a Kurgo Harness. It has seatbelt attachments and also has a front and back hook. They are sturdy and seem comfortable for the dogs.

My 85 lb German Shepherd uses the Rabbitgoo harness. I was going to be very skeptical if that harness was not listed in your Blog but you nailed it – It is a great harness. I still have our original one now going on 4 years – I keep 2 since she loves water and we camp year round – This allows one to dry out.
