A Single Bolt Just Got Thousands of RVs Recalled, Including Ours. Check Your VIN Today

a Brinkley Z-3100 fifth wheel

A suspension bolt defect has triggered recalls across more than a dozen RV brands in 2026, including our own fifth wheel. Here is how to check your VIN in 30 seconds and what to do next.

I want to start with something I do not say often on this site. They recalled my own RV.

Our fifth wheel, the one we call the Beauty, is a Brinkley Model Z 3500. And a few weeks ago Brinkley issued a formal safety recall, REC-2602, covering certain 2025 and 2026 Model Z trailers. The reason is a suspension shock bolt that may have been incorrectly tightened. If a bolt head fractures while you are rolling down the interstate, the head and washer can detach, become road debris, and increase the risk of a crash. NHTSA lists more than 6,000 units potentially affected.

Brinkley is not alone

Here is the part that should get your attention, even if you have never heard of Brinkley. We are not alone. Not even close.

This same shock bolt problem traces back to a single suspension component, the CURT Touring Coil System, and it has rippled across the entire industry in 2026. Alliance, Forest River, Keystone, Grand Design, K.Z., Ember, and others have all issued recalls tied to the same family of suspension bolts.

Add in the unrelated safety campaigns from the same stretch of spring, the undersized ground wire on certain Alliance coaches, a fuel tank that a screw may have punctured on certain Tiffin motorhomes, sewer gas venting inside the cabin on certain Forest River Prime Time Crusaders, and you are looking at one of the busiest recall seasons in recent memory. The May federal recall report alone covered roughly 14,000 RVs.

Now, I am not telling you this to scare you off the road. I have driven nearly half a million miles in every kind of rig you can name, and I am still out there. Recalls are not a sign that the sky is falling. In a strange way, a recall is the system working. The defect got caught, the manufacturer is fixing it for free, and you get to drive more safely. The danger is not the recall. The danger is the owner who never finds out.

Recalls are not a sign that the sky is falling.

So here is your one action item for today. Do not save it for later. Do it before you close this page.

Go to NHTSA.gov, click Recalls, and enter your VIN. It takes about thirty seconds. Your VIN is on your registration, your insurance documents, your title, and usually on a label on the frame, the tongue, or the exterior data plate of a trailer. On a motorhome, you may even see it through the windshield on the dash.

One more thing for motorhome owners. You may have more than one company in the mix. The RV builder made your living space, but a different company may have built the chassis, the engine, and the drivetrain. That means you could have an open recall tied to the coach brand, the chassis maker, or both. When you run your VIN, run it for everything.

What to do if your RV is Part of a Recall

A few tips that make this easier.

Your VIN lives on your registration, your insurance card, your title, and a label on the frame or data plate of a trailer. NHTSA continuously adds VINs to recall campaigns, so a clean result today does not mean clean forever; check back every month or so. And if you want it automated, download NHTSA's free SaferCar app and it will alert your phone the moment your specific rig lands in a recall.

If your rig shows an open recall, your next step is simple. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer. The fix is free. In our case, Brinkley is covering the bolt replacement at no charge, and owners who already paid to have it done get reimbursed. I have read reports from other Model Z owners who had a mobile tech knock it out in under an hour.

We are getting ours handled, and we will be back on the road. The Beauty has carried us beautifully, and one bolt does not change that. But it only got handled because we checked.

Check your VIN. Today. Then go enjoy the summer.
