Photos from the Tahquamenon Falls Winter Campout

It's been a blast at our annual Tahquamenon Falls Winter Campout watching folks get acquainted and reacquainted and, like a bunch of kids on a snow day, head off for winter fun.

There's about 20 inches or snow on the level ground, plenty for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. And pretty much that's what everyone set off doing from the time they arrived. Officially, it started Friday, but some were so anxious to get here that thy came a day early. It officially ends Suuday, but some are having to much fun they've extended their stays through Monday and even Tuesday.

 

This is an active group. We come from nine states and one Canadian province (Ontario). About 50 people in all are gathered up here in the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Each spot has been plowed for us by the DNR and there is electricity at each sites.

There's a big bonfire going pretty much around the clock. The weather is perfect: Daytime highs in the upper 20's, nighttime lows in the lower 20's.

Folks are in Roadtreks, Advanced RVs, a fifth wheel and a truck camper… all enjoying winter camping. Michigan DNR workers have  brought out a couple dozen snowshoe sets and an interpretive ranger will lead an organized hike to the Lower Falls. Some of our folks will be heading ff to watch nearby dog sled races.

Many of those who were here last year so enjoyed the experience that they have returned this year with their own snowshoes and immediately hit the trails. We had a great group dinner together at a the Paradise Inn in nearby Paradise, MI and then hung out around  roaring fire until the yawns sent us back to out RVs.

There is no running water in the campground but there are two vault toilets. The good news is, in the winter, there is no odor or flies in them. The bad news is…. that seat is mighty cold. And, yes, that is me in the photo below, a true winter camping fashion plate emerging from the vaults in my camp sweats and my red Mackinac coat. Damn paparazi. You can't go anywhere without them snapping photos of you.

Thanks to the folks at Roadtrek Motorhomes, each camper received a nice warm winter hat and a matching set of gloves.

I'll let the photos tell the story. I know I missed some of our campers, but here's a look at a bunch of people having fun camping in the wintertime.
