Crime Risks for RVers Overnight Parking at Cracker Barrel (Part 5)
Before we look at safety at Cracker Barrel‘s, let's dispel a rumor: Cracker Barrel has NOT changed its policy of allowing RVers to overnight if allowed by local laws and ordinances.
Across the Internet, a few clickbait headlines from RV content creators gave the strong impression that Cracker Barrel had changed its corporate policy. It hasn't.
It is the same as always. First, RVers need permission from the store manager. Second, if local ordinances allow, RVers can overnight there.
Occasionally, a local jurisdiction will change its ordinances and stop overnight camping. That's what happened that led to the confusing Internet stories. Those changes typically happen because homeless encampments arise or lots of complaints about petty crime or littering reach the ears of local officials.
NOTE: This series arises in response to an email we received from a couple of folks who had long dreamed of going full-time and exploring the US in an RV but, after seeing so many negative stories, were now wondering if it was just too dangerous. As we said in Episode 549 of the podcast that kicked off this series, words have consequences. So we want to lay out, factually and objectively, an answer to the question.

Part 4: Walmart RV Safety: Crime Statistics Every RVer Should Know Before Parking Overnight at Walmart
The Scale of Cracker Barrel Overnight Parking

With 660 locations in the United States, Cracker Barrel restaurants have become a popular destination for RVers seeking free overnight parking. While most locations welcome overnight guests, understanding the crime risks associated with parking lot stays is crucial for RV travelers making informed safety decisions.
There aren't nearly as many Cracker Barrels as Walmarts, but with 660 locations in the United States, there's often one nearby. The restaurant chain operates in 45 states, notably absent from Washington, Wyoming, Vermont, and of course, Hawaii and Alaska. Most locations feature between two and eight designated parking spaces for buses and RVs, with RV and bus parking spaces are usually 40 feet long.
How safe are Cracker Barrels? Very.
Crime Context: Parking Lot Safety Statistics

General Parking Lot Crime Rates
According to FBI data, parking lots are the third most common place where crimes occur, after private homes and streets. National statistics show that more than one in 10 property crimes happen in parking lots or garages. That's about 1,400 incidents happening in car dealerships, retail storefronts, and commercial parking lots all over the U.S. every day.
RV-Specific Crime Statistics
For RV travelers specifically, crime rates in general are low. You only have a one in 25,000 chance of being a victim of some sort of major crime in an RV campground. To put that in perspective, that is only a .004% chance. For comparison, when it comes to robbery elsewhere, there is a 1.2% chance of being robbed.
Documented Crime Incidents at Cracker Barrel Locations
Robbery and Violent Crime Cases
Research reveals several documented violent crimes at Cracker Barrel locations. But none involved RVers. They were robberies, shoplifting, or thefts from the store itself.
Walmart Comparison: Overnight Parking Crime Rates

Security Differences
Cracker Barrel locations typically offer better security conditions compared to Walmart:
- They all have good safety lighting and quieter parking lots than Walmarts that also allow overnight parking
- The hours of operation are also more conducive to less traffic during peak sleep times, with the doors opening at 7am and closing at 10pm
- The restaurant is not open 24 hours a day, so there is no reason for vehicles to be cruising there after hours, and the parking lots at Cracker Barrel are private
- Some stores have security patrols at night, others have local police that will drive by.
Risk Factors and Mitigation Strategies
Location-Specific Risk Assessment
Sometimes, an outlet is present in an area with a high crime rate. The crime risk varies significantly based on:
- Local neighborhood crime statistics
- Urban vs. rural location
- Proximity to major highways
- Local law enforcement presence
Safety Measures
RVers can reduce risks by:
- Always prioritize safety when parking overnight. Lock your RV, stay aware of your surroundings, and be cautious of any potential security concerns
- If safety is something that you're worried about, bring it up when you speak to the manager
- Using apps like http://www.city-data.com where you only need to enter the city and state and the site will pull up several details about the city to research crime statistics before arrival
Industry Context
We don't think Cracker Barrels are as problematic as a truck stop or Walmart. Most are in nicer areas, according to our 15 years of experience in overnighting at many. This sentiment is supported by the operational differences between Cracker Barrel and 24-hour retail establishments.
Conclusion and Risk Assessment
While no overnight parking option is completely risk-free, Cracker Barrel locations generally present much lower crime risks compared to many alternatives. The statistical probability of becoming a crime victim while overnight parking at a Cracker Barrel remains very low, particularly when compared to general parking lot crime rates.
This analysis is based on publicly available crime reports, RV community feedback, our own experience from overnighting at Cracker Barrels all across the country, and official statistics. Individual risk assessment should always consider local conditions and personal comfort levels.

Your article states “For RV travelers specifically, crime rates in general are low. You only have a one in 25,000 chance of being a victim of some sort of major crime in an RV campground. To put that in perspective, that is only a .004% chance. For comparison, when it comes to robbery elsewhere, there is a 1.2% chance of being robbed.” In other mathematical terms, it’s 3 times more likely to be robbed elsewhere. I tried to find statistics about crime rates at rest areas and truck stops, but basically failed to uncover meaningful data, except that there is certainly crime at both locations, mostly regarding theft, and most crimes are left unsolved.
Excellent precautions and good for all scenarios
Good to know. I’ll keep it in mind next time.
Thanks for the information – I’ll definitely remember all of this!
Good information
We’ve stayed a few times overnight at Cracker Barrell. It’s been a good deal when we’ve been able to and we usually have dinner and breakfast there too. A few times the parking lot was too full and cars parked in the RV slots which dissuaded me from attempting the maneuver.
Very informative , never had any issues with overnight parking anywhere but do know a few RVers that have , there are ways to prevent most but not all
This is some very good information
It’s a nice option to have when you are on the road, I seldom would leave the RV unattended anyway. You’re there for a no-cost option to sleep, then move on the next day mostly
I had no idea RVs could stay overnight at Cracker Barrel. Interesting story.
Thanks for clearing up the rumors.
Super cool!
Good content to consider.
Camping or not, be aware of your surroundings. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t hang around.
I guess I would consider a Cracker Barrel parking lot if original plans were somehow disrupted but it wouldn’t be my first choice!
I don’t usually feel safe parking in business parking lots.
thank you didn’t realize this, it opened my eyes.
This is so helpful thank you
oh wow i heard the opposite, great to know the facts
Very interesting article.
I agree with the good information in this post.
We will continue to Boondockers at CrackerBarrel and be safety aware!
Situation awareness is key to all parking areas!
We are so sad that we let our travel trailer go to the insurance company after a recent hail storm where it was a total loss from the damage.
Good information
Love listening or watching updates and information you share with all us RVers! Thank you!
Being able to park at Cracker Barrel can be a life saver if travel plans get disturbed. I personally would rather stay at a more bucolic location.
Thanks for the great info and for all your hard work. Hoping to win the Waggle to keep an eye on our fur babies.

We will be going on a cross country trip soon. Thanks for the reminder that Cracker Barrel is a good option for an overnight rest.
Good information. Thank you.
