Our 3 Favorite RV Camping Chairs

| Updated Dec 22, 2020

When it comes to RV accessories, Camping Chairs are at the top of every RVer's must-have list! Here are 3 of our favorites:

One of the most asked questions we get has to do with the portable camping chairs we carry around with us in our RV for outside seating.

We have tried a bunch and own three different styles of camping chairs that we take with us on pretty much every trip.

Telescoping Camping Chairs

Our 3 Favorite RV Camping Chairs 1
We have two of the Pico telescoping camping chairs. We've had them for nine years and they are still in great shape

I warn you, our all-time favorite RV Camping Chairs are expensive. But the Pico Telescoping Directors Chair has been bulletproof for us.

We have two of them.

They were the very first RV accessories we bought for our when we were just starting out in 2012.

Mike selected them because of how small they are.

Each chair telescopes down to the size of an oversized laptop. They are made of breathable nylon mesh and polyester fabric and have scratch-free nylon-coated feet. And they have a beverage holder and a side pocket.

They set up and become regular-sized outdoor armchairs.

They are probably the first thing we bring out when we set up camp. And, yes, they are surprisingly comfortable.

Ours are nine years old and still in great shape!

We know a lot of fellow RV Lifestyle Fellow Travelers have also bought them after seeing ours, so we are obviously not alone in liking these chairs, despite the fact that, at about $100 each, they are certainly on the expensive side.

The high cost is no doubt because of the way they telescope down so small.

There are two more chairs we also now carry in our RV.

Zero Gravity Reclining Camping Chairs

Our 3 Favorite RV Camping Chairs 2
You can get two of these Zero Gravity camping chairs for $99

They are Zero Gravity Reclining chairs, typically sold for around pools and patios, also make great camping chairs. Mike and I call them out “look at the sky chairs” because they let you recline way back.

They take up quite a bit of room, and might be too big for some of the smaller camervans.

But as for us, we wouldn’t think of heading out anywhere without bringing at least one of these chairs as well.

The only problem we have with them is that every time Mike gets in his, he kicks back and promptly falls asleep. These are great chairs to take a nap

You can get two of the models we have from Amazon for $99.

But check Walmart as we’ve seen them on sale from time to time for considerably less.

The Freestyle Rocker Camping Chair

Our 3 Favorite RV Camping Chairs 3
The GCI Freestyle Rocker is one of the most comfortable camping chairs I've used.

This is one of the best camping chairs we have found and we added it to our collection a couple of years ago after seeing it in use at an RV show.

I sat in it and found it so comfortable. I really like the way it supports my back.

It's the GCI Freestyle Rocker and at $65, it is very sturdy and well made.

Here's a video of the chair in use, shot not long after we bought them ourselves a couple of years back.

It rocks because of special springs, which look a lot like shock absorbers.

It weighs about 12 pounds, has its own drink holder and it folds up very easily. Just pull a handle and it's ready for transport. The chair comes in several different colors and has a 250-pound weight limit.

Carrying Camping Chairs in an RV

Obviously, we don't bring all of these camping chairs with us on every trip.

Usually, we take the two telescoping chairs, one gravity chair, and the rocker.

The telescoping camping chairs take up very little room. Miniscule, really. So we can easily take four without sacrificing too much space.

One last tip: Write your name on whatever camping chairs you have in permanent ink from a Sharpie. Camping chairs have a habit of getting lost, left behind, or stolen. Thieves don't like taking items whose ownership is marked. And if you do forget to pack it up and leave it behind, someone who finds it will have a way to reach you.

My favorite camping chair is Best Choice Products Zero Gravity. This chair can surely offer a high level of comfort provided for users with a bad back. Can smoothly recline just by leaning back and raising your legs.

Thank you Jennifer for your article about camping chairs. It was very detailed regarding the attributes and issues to consider. The timing of the article was perfect for me because I have been researching camping chairs and couldn’t decide which one to buy. After reading your article I ordered the Pico Telescoping Chair to take on our first multi week trip in our new RV beginning in January from Virginia to Florida. Wishing you and your family a happy holiday season and a new year not hampered by travel restrictions. Stay safe.
