Summary of this Post show
One of the unexpected gifts of getting older is learning the difference between what matters and what simply takes up space.
That thought crossed my mind this weekend as I wandered through our RV, putting a few things away after our last trip. I found a drawer full of “just in case” gadgets that haven't seen daylight in years. Extra cables for devices we no longer own. Specialty tools I was convinced I'd need someday. A flashlight that hasn't worked since who knows when.
We all do it. We carry things because we might need them. But the longer I've traveled, the more I've realized the same thing is true in life.
That thought came to me from my weekend email. A long, sad story of anger and disappointment from an RV owner who once got taken by a scoundrel of an RV dealer. It happened years ago. Two RVs ago for him. But he just can't let it go and has transferred that anger to every RV dealer everywhere, as if one was bad, they all must be bad.
As I read his email, I thought of getting rid of things I no longer need in the RV. For all of us…. Maybe it's not just things we need to let go of.
The Things We Carry
We carry old disappointments. Old arguments. Regrets over decisions we can't undo. Worries about things that probably aren't going to happen. We drag them from campground to campground, season to season, year to year. They take up space, too.
The beautiful thing about the RV lifestyle is that it constantly reminds us to simplify. Every pound matters. Every storage compartment has limits. Eventually, you reach the point where something has to go before something new can come in. Maybe our hearts work the same way.
Perhaps this week is a good time to let go of one thing you've been carrying that no longer serves you. An old grudge. A nagging fear. The feeling that you're somehow running out of time. Because you're not.
As long as you're still curious enough to take the next trip, watch the next sunrise, or pull into a campground you've never visited before, there's still another chapter waiting to be written.
Travel has taught me that life's richest memories don't come from the things we pack. They come from the experiences we make after we arrive. So today, maybe unpack something you don't need anymore. It might just make room for something wonderful.
