New Class B Aktiv by Hymer makes North American debut

| Updated Mar 25, 2016

Less than a month after Roadtrek Motorhomes was sold to the Erwin Hymer Group North America Inc, the company is debuting an all-new Class B motorhome called the Aktiv, on display this weekend at the New York International Auto Show,

With production to start in mid-April at the company's Kitchener Ontario, Canada factory, the Aktiv is on the Ram Promaster 2500 regular van chassis and is 19 feet seven inches long. Inside, it boasts an open aisle floor plan and comes equipped with a full galley, entertainment system, lots of interior storage and a spacious full bathroom with shower.

A key feature is the option of having a permanent queen-sized bed in the rear with a premium mattress that flips up for travel and day to day living, but then quickly folds down for sleeping. There is storage under the bed.

Also new to the Class B market here is the eco-friendly and very convenient cassette toilet system, meaning there is no need for a black water tank. he primary advantage of a cassette toilet is that it can be dumped into any residential toilet.  You can also use a RV dump station with a cassette toilet, but you don’t need one.

The bathroom also has some innovative space-saving features. The sink flips up and can be stored  in the upright position to allow more room for using the bathroom and showering. The toilet is an ergonomic toilet that swivels for just the right fit.

“The Hymer Aktiv will rewrite the book for Class B motorhomes in North America,” said Jim Hammill, President and CEO of Erwin Hymer Group North America, Inc.. “The Hymer Aktiv combines unprecedented performance and unrivaled fit and finish with the versatility of a motorhome in a smaller package. The Hymer Aktiv is designed to meet the needs of the outdoor adventurist, the weekend explorer and so much more.”

Hammill notes that the Aktiv was designed after extensive market research on the needs of the North American consumer, while retaining Hymer brand innovations from Europe, “which are more advanced than what was previously available in the North American RV market.”

The name Aktiv is German for active.

It will be sold through a new network of dealers across North America that the company hopes to announce in a few weeks. Suggested retail for the base model is $105,000 U.S., but options like solar (250 watts), the VoltStart auto-start battery technology and the EcoTrek 200 or 400 lithium power module pioneered by Roadtrek, a screen package for the passenger side door and rear cargo door and other extras will add to the price depending on the customer's wishes.

How does the four sleeper capacity work? That front seat turns into a bed, but I would like to know how, any chance I could get a picture?

Intriguing RV design, particularly with the cassette toilet. Having exchanged RV’s with an Irish Family, and having used their Hymer RV with cassette toilet, I have long wondered why we don’t have that very convenient option available in the U.S. Further, I have several friends who have shipped their RVs to Europe via RORO containers and a cassette toilet would be so much more useful for that purpose! Very intriguing… thanks for sharing!

I love the cassette toilet set-up as it is really efficient and easy to use.
