How Much Wind Is Too Much When Driving an RV? (Quick Answer!)

| Updated May 9, 2024

How much wind is too much before you won’t drive your RV? We get this question a lot, especially when RVers are facing winds over 30 mph.

In general, it is best to avoid driving an RV in strong winds exceeding 45 mph. But that is not a hold-fast rule and it strongly depends on several factors, like the size and type of your RV and which direction the wind is blowing.

For us, the answer depends on whether we’re towing our fifth wheel or driving a Sprinter-based Leisure Travel Vans motorhome. You need to take into account the size and type of your RV.

It also depends on whether the winds are crosswise. If you're driving into the wind or it's at your RV's back, you can withstand some higher winds. (Heck, the tailwind may help your gas mileage! Although a headwind will kill it!)

However, you'll need to be more careful if the wind is blowing at an angle or crosswise. If so, rather than fight it, I’d for sure stay put with the fifth wheel.

If I'm driving our small motorhome and could drive backroad two-lanes, I might venture forth where roadside trees may lessen the buffeting effect of the wind. But if I did go, I’d drive slow, and if strong gusts were frequent, I’d be ready to call it a day and hole up somewhere.

Safety first would be the rule.
