RV Reality Week: The Real Reason So Many RV Trips Go Bad, and It Has Nothing to Do With Breakdowns

Welcome to RV Reality Week: Post 2 of 3

What's the real reason so many RV trips go bad? During RV show season, the message is clear. Go further. See more. Upgrade everything.

But some of the hardest RV days have nothing to do with mechanical problems.

I remember a trip early on where we tried to do too much in too little time. The itinerary looked reasonable on a map. In reality, it meant long drive days, late arrivals, and the constant feeling that we were behind.

By the third day, nobody was enjoying anything. We were tired. Short-tempered. Focused on the next stop instead of where we were.

Nothing broke. But the trip still felt broken. That is when it clicked.

Why do RV trips go bad? Expectations matter more than experience.

RV shows are great at selling potential. What they rarely show is the cost of pushing too hard. Weather delays. Traffic backups. Campgrounds that look nothing like the photos.

I remember pulling into a campground once, tired and ready to relax, only to find our site backed up against a dumpster. Not exactly the postcard moment we imagined. We could have let it ruin the night. Instead, we laughed about it and went for a walk. That walk turned into a great conversation with a neighbor who later became a friend.

Some of our best RV days happened when the rig never moved. Slow mornings. Coffee outside. No schedule.

The happiest RVers I know fiercely protect those days.

Another expectation trap is trying to recreate resort vacations. Campgrounds are shared spaces. Sometimes neighbors are loud. Sometimes the weather traps you inside.

Sometimes plans change without asking your permission. When you accept that, stress fades.
