Episode 139: Paying Jobs for RVers

| Updated May 10, 2017

Would you like to leave your current job and fulltime in an RV? Or perhaps you’re retired and would like to travel more in your recreational vehicle but need to have some income to offset the costs of living on the road.

In this episode, we talk about making money while you’re out there RVing.

Yes, it is possible – and practical – to make enough money to live in an RV full-time, travel, and enjoy life! You may be surprised to know there are more jobs for RVers and work campers than there are RVers and campers willing to work. You can also earn a living running a business from your RV.

Our guest today has been helping RVers find paying jobs for many years.

Her name is Colleen and, with husband, Bob, she publishes a Workers on Wheels website that keeps track of temporary, seasonal, and mobile jobs that pay. Also, RV based business, online careers, work camper campground jobs, and volunteer workamper positions. You can do them all while traveling, camping, or living in a recreational vehicle – while being Workers On Wheels!

Plus your questions, comments and tips.

Show Notes for Episode #139 May 10, 2017 of Roadtreking – The RV Podcast:

JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK

In an RV, storage space is at a premium. And one of the things that takes up a lot of that space is clothing.[spp-timestamp time=”8:10″]

Episode 139: Paying Jobs for RVers 1
Lise's shoe storage bag holds her clothng. She found this at Ikea

We recently met a woman named Lise, who travels solo in her Class B RV.

And Lise showed us how she’s able to maximize her clothes storage with a great accessory.

She uses a cloth shoe storage bag she bought at Ikea, rolling her clothes and keeping them in the shoe storage bins. See the photo at left.

LISTENER QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK:

  • First this listener note about a recent tip we had on our YouTube RV Lifestyle Channel about removing bugs that get squished on our windshields.  You can find that tip on our RV Tips and How-To Playlist or by clicking here [spp-timestamp time=”12:40″]
  • Listener Julie is looking for an owner’s manual for her Roadtrek RV. We refer her to the Roadtrek.com corporate site, Here’s a link to the page that lets you download a manual for every model they have made. [spp-timestamp time=”15:03″]
  • Jon wants to know how long he has to wait for an RV that is propelled by electricity. Mike says a very long time as he knows of nothing like that in the works for RVers. [spp-timestamp time=”16:28″]
  • And listener Jeff has a suggestion to the person in episode 138 of the RV Podcast who wanted to use a crock pot to slow cook as they drive down the road in their RV. It’s a non-electric Thermal Cooker. It comes with an inner pot that will go over the stove top to boil the food. Once the food is boiled, set into the outer, stainless steel vacuum insulated container to allow the food to cook thoroughly without fire or electricity while the outside body stays cool to touch. We found a whole page of them on Amazon starting at a little over $60. [spp-timestamp time=”17:34″]

PET TIP OF THE WEEK

With warm weather we become more aware of  the need to protect our pets from fleas, ticks and parasites. [spp-timestamp time=”22:09″]

But these days, many vets are urging year-round protection programs.

Fleas are the most common external parasite that can plague pets, and they can lead to irritated skin, hair loss, hot spots, and infection. Fleas can also introduce other parasites into your cat or fog. All it takes is for your pet to swallow one flea, and it can to end up with tapeworms, the most common internal parasite affecting dogs and cats.

Year-round prevention is key, say animal health experts.  They suggest regular flea and intestinal parasite control, as well as heartworm prevention.

You also need to protect your pet against ticks. Ticks are major health worries for pets and people, linked to Lyme disease among and many other serious ailments. Many vets now recommend that your pet be put on tick prevention program year round,

Because some parasite medications made for dogs can be fatal to cats, talk to your vet about keeping your precious pets worm-free, flea-free — and safe.

TRAVELING TECH TIP:

Episode 139: Paying Jobs for RVers 3
Steve Van Dinter

By Steve Van Dinter
Verizon Wireless

Regardless of whether people have a wearable device today, chances are good in the next year or two there’ll be a smart device on their wrists. And there’s no better time than now to start looking because the choices are endless. [spp-timestamp time=”48:25″]

And that means often the question isn’t whether to get one…but which one to go with. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • If you’re looking to keep track of your activity and sleep, get notifications of calls and texts and have continuous heart rate monitoring, look no further than the Fitbit Charge 2. And with all it does you’ll be surprised the battery lasts up to five days on a charge!
  • Let’s say you’re a bit more concerned with how a watch looks on your wrist – but then again you still want the functionality that comes with a smart device? No worries – Fossil Q Grant and Q Tailor Hybrid smartwatches have you covered. At first glance, there’s no way anyone would know it’s anything but a traditional watch. But once you wear it, the vibration and LED notifications let you know this device is so much more. Fitness tracking, notifications and a six month battery life make the Fossil Q hybrids definitely worth a look.
  • Finally if you’re ready for the smartwatch with a colorful screen and apps, you guessed it there are options here as well. From the Apple Watch, to Samsung’s Gear S3 and the newest – Wear 24, all of them have amazing screens and will make your wrist oh so smart. And my picks – the Samsung Gear S3 and Wear 24 also come with 4G LTE technology as well, meaning even when you’re away from your phone or if your phone battery dies you can still make and receive calls and texts, do google searches and even order an Uber.

Again it just all comes down to what makes the most sense for you.

This part of the podcast is brought to you by Verizon, which operates America’s most reliable wireless network, with more than 112 million retail connections nationwide..

OFF THE BEATEN PATH REPORT –  Stromy Kromer Hats, Ironwood, MI

Ball caps, cowboy hats, straw hats, watch caps and lately, Stormy Kromer hats. [spp-timestamp time=”51:44″]

We picked up our first Stormy Kromer hats while doing some winter camping a couple years ago in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Seemed like every Yooper we saw was wearing one. So Jennifer and I both got one, me a rakish black, Jennifer’s a demure grey with pink trim.

As we returned from that trip but kept wearing our hats, we met lots of other people who either had one, knew someone who had one or wanted one.

Lots of people call them an Elmer Fudd hat. Don’t do that.

Episode 139: Paying Jobs for RVers 4
Mike and Jennifer in their Stormy Kromer hats

This is a Stormy Kromer hat, steeped in UP tradition. Here’s the official story, from the Stormy Kromer website:

George “Stormy” Kromer was a real guy – a semi-pro baseball player and railroad engineer. Not the kind of guy you’d expect to start a clothing company, in other words, but one who happened to create a cap that became known for long-comfort and the ability to stay snug, even in the fiercest winds.

The hats have really become cult items.Episode 139: Paying Jobs for RVers 5

Hollywood and rock stars wear them, they’re showing up in trendy magazines and a new marketing campaign is about to make them even better know.

The Stormy Kromer factory in Ironwood welcomes tours. Just stop in next time you are through the area. A wall of photos tells the history and story of this cool hat. You can watch the Yooper ladies in the sewing room assembling the hats. And afterwards, shop a retail area of the factory to get your own.

Here’s my video of the factory and the hats: https://youtu.be/ZGebSrX51-0
