DIY Customization of a Sprinter Van

The Sprinter Van is a favorite of RV manufacturers who turn them into Class B motorthomes and DIYers, who like to customize them for their specific needs.

At the recent Overland East Expo, we met Raymond Barre of rbcomponents.com, a California upfitter who invited us to see how he customized a Sprinter Van into a boondocking recreational vehicle. He calls it his “adventure RV.”

It took about 500 man hours to customize the van he had on display. Much of his small company's work is in selling components to DIY-ers who like to do their own customizations in their garages or backyards.

Barre told us that boondocking and overlanding are becoming huge drivers of the RV business and that traditional RV campgrounds are rapidly losing their appeal to many new RVers. “Technology makes having hookups unnecessary and people really want to get away from the crowds and experience the wilderness,” he said.

Be sure to check out the recliner seat he put in. Sweet.
