December at Home: When RVers Trade Travel Days for Doctor Appointments
Every December, without fail, Jennifer and I do the same thing.
We come home.
The RV is winterized. It is parked. It is waiting patiently for 2026. And suddenly, our calendars look nothing like RV life at all. Instead of campground reservations and route planning, we are juggling dentists, doctors, eye exams, annual checkups, and that one appointment we kept putting off all year because “we’ll do it when we’re home.”
If you know, you know.
December for RVers is not exactly restful.
It is necessary. Responsible. And somehow still exhausting.
This year, we even managed to level up December’s chaos. Jennifer came down with Influenza A, she’s doing much better now, but it meant canceling a long-planned Mini-MeetUp with community friends. And just to keep things balanced, my calendar filled up with dental appointments for a root canal. Because nothing says “holiday season” quite like soup, canceled plans, and a dentist asking if you’re “feeling pressure.”
We laugh every year at how quickly our at home days fill up. The freedom of RV life gives way to waiting rooms, clipboards, and reminders that yes, we are absolutely due for that test. Again.
And yet, this season serves a purpose.
RV life teaches us to listen to our bodies, but December is when we really do it. We check in. We reset. We take care of the physical stuff so we can enjoy the freedom later without nagging worries in the back of our minds.
Still, it can feel like a lot.
You finally stop moving, and suddenly everything catches up with you. Fatigue. Stress. A sense that Christmas is racing toward you while you are standing still.
Here is the encouragement.
December is not a pause in your RV lifestyle. It is part of it.
Taking care of your health is not time off the road. It is what keeps you on it.
If this month feels busy, give yourself grace. You are doing important things, even if it does not look adventurous. And when the RV door opens again next year, you will step inside knowing you took care of what mattered.
That is not lost time. That is wise time.
