Get America the Beautiful Pass!

Many of the campgrounds we recommend are located in National Parks, which require a separate fee for vehicle entrance on top of any campground fees. So you may want to consider purchasing an America the Beautiful Pass. For one price, you can obtain this yearly pass and gain access to all National Parks throughout the country.

If you are over 62, get the Senior Lifetime Pass for $80, and is good for entrance to all recreation sites run by the National Park Service. Go here for more details.

Best RV Campgrounds in Colorado

For such a gorgeous and mountainous state, Colorado does have its share of inclement weather, especially in the higher elevations. Check out this great road advisory website, and check ahead for any road condition warnings.

And now, on to the good stuff! Here are the best campgrounds we’ve found in Colorado.

1. Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Cheyenne Mountain State Park. Be sure to book your reservation in advance for this one, it is popular! Located in Colorado Springs, it’s a well-maintained campground, and the sites are on the larger side.

See deer, turkey, and possibly even bears outside your RV window. The views of the surrounding mountains are breathtaking. There are lots of trails to explore, and several of them are dog-friendly.

Sites have full hookups, and the campground has coin-operated showers and laundry, as well as flush toilets.

2. Meadow Ridge Campground

Mountain Landscape. Colorado Wilderness Backcountry Road.

Meadow Ridge Campground.  This campground is beautiful, with great views of Pike’s Peak. It is a little rough around the edges, with some gravel roads.

There are 19 sites, all rustic with no hookups, but there are bathrooms, so you will essentially be boondocking. Still, a wonderful place to spend the night!

3. Glacier Basin Campground

Glacier Basin Campground. Here is a gorgeous National Park campground with well-spaced sites, with several walking trails for all levels. This is a dry campground, so no hookups are available, with loops A and B having the most tree cover.

The 150 sites all have a picnic table and fire grate. There are flush toilets, potable water, a dump station, and firewood for sale. It is a seasonal campground, so check the open dates.

4. Moraine Park Campground

Moraine Park Campground. Located about 2.5 miles south of the Beaver Meadow entrance station, this is another gorgeous park, with great views of the Meadowlands.

Wildlife such as elk, deer, and even the occasional bear can be seen! As this is a dry campground, there are no hookups or showers, and there are vault toilets. There are many trails to explore.

5. Timber Creek Campground

Timber Creek Campground. Located on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, this campground is located at a higher elevation, affording wonderful views of the wide-open spaces. All sites are first-come, first serviced, and each has a picnic table and fire ring.

It is a dry campsite, with toilets but no showers, however, you can get a pass from the campground to access showers at a nearby motel, if you need it. Lots of wildlife.

Winding River Resort. A great resort in the Rockies near Grand Lake, right on the Colorado River. It’s family-friendly, with lots of activities such as ATV rentals, horse trail and pony rides, and even a petting farm!

With a playground, frisbee golf, and basketball court, the kids will be busy all day. Usually open from Memorial Day through September, 37 of the 147 sites have full hook-ups, and the grounds have a dump station, flush toilets and showers, water, laundry, and WiFi.

7. Monument RV Resort

Monument RV Park. With easy access from the highway, this is located near the Colorado National Monument at Fruita, CO. The staff is friendly and the grounds are quiet, with more shade around the perimeter of the campground.

There are lots of great trails around, and all sites have a picnic table, some with full hookups. The resort has laundry rooms, showers and toilets, free WiFi and cable TV, a dump station, and a pool.

8. South Rim Campground

South Rim Campground. A great choice when in the southern area of the Black Canyon, as it affords the best views of the canyon. Sites are well-spaced, with shrubbery in between sites for privacy. Gaze up and the wide-open night sky and enjoy the scenery and wildlife all around you.

This is primarily a rustic campground, with electric hookups in Loop B and available in the summer only. Otherwise, the campground is open year-round, and sites have picnic tables and fire rings.

9. North Rim Campground

North Rim Campground. This is a dry campground, with no hookups or amenities except vault toilets, so you are essentially boondocking. With 13 sites, they are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

There is a trail overlooking the north rim directly from the grounds, making for an outstanding view. To get here, go through Crawford, and it’s about 16 miles southwest of town.

When Jennifer and I first went to Colorado, I felt like I finally understood what John Denver meant by his song: I've now been Rocky Mountain High.

And like Denver, exploring all that Colorado has to offer made me want to sing, too.
