The Ultimate Boondocking RV system

| Updated Jul 27, 2014

We RVers do like to take our outdoor toys with us.

And a lot of us like to dry camp, boondocking far from commercial campgrounds, deep in the wilderness where we can play with our kayaks, canoes and mountain bikes. But how do you carry all that gear? And more importantly, how do you handle those right boondocking roads?

ultimateboondocking (1 of 1)Not long ago I ran into Steve McKenzie from Madison, WI. We were both on our way out of the Munising, MI tourist campground and his rig – a 4 x 4 Sportsmobile custom camping van converted into an RV that was  towing an XVenture off road trailer made by Schutt Industries – sure caught my eye. On top of the rugged looking trailer were two kayaks. At the back were two mountain bikes.

Both the van and the trailer were covered in mud, a testimony to the rough roads McKenzie and his wife had been traveling in the Hiawathy National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

His very customized system is not for everybody. But it is the ultimate boondocking machine for those who really want to get away from it all.

He gives us a tour of the trailer and his Sportsmobile camper van in this video:
