It's big and wild and rugged and beautiful.
I guess if I were on horseback, or trying tp pull a wagon train, or being chased by Indians here, maybe the name would fit. But after driving it in my Roadtrek, peddling it on my mountain bike and hiking it from early morning till sunset today, I can't believe how magnificent this huge wilderness stretch of South Dakota is to the eye.
Today was a day to explore, starting with a tough 10 miles of mostly up trails this morning on my bike. Then Jennifer and I grabbed the cameras, strapped on our hiking shoes and headed out.
I'm just going to let the photos speak for themselves.
We saw prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, bison and awesome rock sculptures that made for a surreal, almost moonscape feel.
Tomorrow morning, we head to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. Then on to Billings, Montana by nightfall.
