The Roadtreking Gathering at Tobermory

| Updated Sep 5, 2016

This promises to be quite the week. About 50 Roadtreking regulars have gathered in Canada's Bruce Peninsula National Park this week for five days of hiking and exploring some of North America's most pristine wilderness.

We're in Northern Ontario near the town of Tobermory, a small community located at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula, which juts out into Lake Huron about 150 miles north of Toronto.Tobermory is known as the “fresh water SCUBA diving capital of the world” because of the numerous shipwrecks that lie in the surrounding waters, especially in Fathom Five National Marine Park, which is is in the waters around us..

It's strictly boondocking. There are no hookups, no showers and no crowds. We're camped right on the rocky shoreline of Cyprus Lake, a beautiful, crystal clear inland  a short hike from the rugged Lake Huron coast. The air is clean and smells of the Cedar that surrounds us.

We're in bear country, so we need to practice clean campsite protocols, but most of these folks are veteran campers and know the routine.

It's quiet and the late summer air cools enough that you need a good blanket at night for perfect sleeping weather. The northern woods is the best stress remover I know of.

Many of us stood on the lakeshore and watched the sun go down and change the sky to a gorgeous palette of reds, oranges and yellows. Afterwards, several of us were out to stare the velvet black star-studded sky.

Here's a Live Video report we did the first night night via Facebook that introduces you to the area and some of the people at our gathering.

Here are some photos…

We plan to do a lot of hiking this week on awesome trails like these

We'll be recording this week;s podcast from here and we'll have more photos and posts from the gathering later this week.
