Lake Louise is in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada, and known for its turquoise, glacier-fed waters ringed by high peaks that make for postcard-like photographs.

But in summer, it’s also crowded. Really crowded. Frankly, we weren’t prepared for the crowds. They were everywhere. Four and five deep along the lakefront when we visited in early July. This year, the crowds were even bigger than normal because of free national park admission in conjunction with Canada's 150th birthday.
But if patient, no mater how crowded it is, you’ll get an opening for that perfect shot.
Most of the crowds congregate around the chateau-style hotel. Hiking trails can get you away from all your fellow tourists. And there’s a canoe dock that rents them by the hour so you can get out in the lake to really appreciate the view.
Lake Louise is in Banff National Park and the park, too, is very crowded. On the day we visited, we wanted to see the famous Johnston Canyon area. But there was no parking to be found, anywhere for more than two miles around.
But once you get out of the crowded areas, Banff will simply overwhelm you.
If you visit Banff, we recommend a stay of at least a week. And if you a need camping spot in the summer or early fall. Make them as far in advance as possible.
