Jennifer's Tips: Get More Into Your Freezer 1
The Burkett's freezer template

One frustration many RVers have is not having enough room to take all the things they’d like in those small RV refrigerators.

Our friends Tom Burkett and his wife, Patti, have found an innovative way to get more food in the RV freezer.

The Burketts have a 1997 Roadtrek Popular-190.

And though he calls his tip “geeky”, we think it’s a darn good recommendation for getting more into an RV freezer.

“It has a fairly small refrigerator,” he said. “Lots of Roadtreks of that vintage have the same fridge or a similar one of the same size. The fridge can be a real challenge when taking a trip to an area where fresh food is not readily available.”

A recent camping trip in the southwest part of the U.S. that put the Burketts more than 100 miles from the grocery stores is a prime example, Burkett said, of why innovation is sometimes needed.

They managed to fit nine meals, plus an assortment of breakfast food, into the tiny freezer.

How’d they do it?

Start by measuring the freezer compartment, and make a “mock-up” of it using foam board and duct tape.

Head to the store and find disposable freezer containers that will allow you maximum use of minimum space. (You will likely have to experiment a few times to get it perfected.)

Prepare your food at home and freeze the items in the plastic freezer bags. Then pack and arrange in the mock up.

Because you’ve already “packed” the items in the mock-up, you know everything will fit.

“It may sound like a lot of trouble, but we think we got better use out of the freezer than we would have by trial-and-error,” Tom Burkett said.
