Is there anything that bugs an RVer more than, well… bugs?

Warm weather comes with a price. Biting, stinging, buzzing insects.

On this edition of How We Roll in our RV, Jennifer and I answer a reader's questions about the system of screens we use on doors and windows to keep insects out.

No system is totally bugproof, of course, but as we video taped this report we were in a campground on the edge of the Everglades, home to swarms of mosquitoes and No-See-Ums.

Tony, I’d like to see more about how you constructed the sliding door opening’s screening, especially how you attached the top and sides to the van. How bug-proof was this? How easy to add/remove when “off season”, ie no bugs? Any issues re staying in place despite multiple entry/exits?

We encountered the same problem on our Pleasure Way. On the side door we bought one of those ” As seen on TV” MagnaScreens where it “snaps back together with magnets, I bought industrial type velcrow to mount it. Does it snap back together every time ? no but just a quick jiggle and it does. I think it actually works pretty good considering.On the back door opening we sewed 2 pieces together to make it big enough, I researched on the internet and found really powerful magnets that are about the size of a nickel and glued them all around the edges about 18” apart or so and that works well. Front door as you can see we bought Skeeter Beaters, my only complaint about those is if a small gust comes along sometimes it blows them off and leaves your windows wide open !.I learned if we are going to be away walking, showering etc I just roll windows up until we return.I might replace magnets with those other magnets. Wish we had all of this on our trip to Alaska ! but we are prepared now. I can provide more info if someone is interested.
