I’m here!
It’s been a while, but I am back on the road for a couple of months. I left yesterday. The last few weeks at home have been hectic, that’s for sure. Not only was it the holidays with all the family and social activities, I also had quite a bit of construction work done on my home. To top it off, I had the stomach flu starting New Year’s Day. Ick.
Interspersed between all of that, I have had to take OLGA, my RS Adventurous, to be serviced five times. Once to the RV place to be winterized and have some maintenance done: gas detector fixed, propane leaks fixed, sewer hose replaced and the house batteries replaced. Then to a tire place where she got six brand new Michelins. Then to the Mercedes dealer for routine service, but they found that they had screwed up the power steering during the last maintenance. I had to take it back twice to have it repaired. None of these places are close to my house, of course. But now she’s tip-top and I caught up on a lot of reading in those waiting rooms.
Lastly, I had taken the rear passenger captain’s chair out and finally had a nice matching wooden box built and installed. It’s where I conveniently stow my stinky footwear, dog toys and other miscellaneous junk. It’s heavy duty enough that it may be sat upon as well. Goodbye big green plastic bin.
I am south. It’s been ridiculously cold in Kansas City and wouldn’t you know it? The day I leave- 60 degrees and sunshine! But I’m wise to the tricky Midwest weather and know it will be frigid again in no time. I’m sort of over having to put on 4 layers of clothing twice a day to walk the dog. Why did I bond with a Husky anyway? And it’s not like KC has fluffy white snow with beautiful rosy -cheeked people sporting skis across their shoulders. We just have brown grass and high heating bills.
Plus, I am reconnecting with a gang of Roadtrek pals, like the big boss Mike Wendland. We’ll catch up in February if he has thawed out enough after his winter campout in northern Michigan. We’ll be at the 2nd annual “Smokin’ on the Bayou” Gautier, Miss. get together. (I’m going to ask for a raise and better hours, Mike, so consider yourself forewarned!)
Usually, I don’t like long drives, but I made it just into Mississippi last night after enjoying a spectacular sunset. 
I was pooped and went to bed early so I woke before dawn this morning. Her Majesty, the Pooch, and I enjoyed a lovely walk under a huge crescent moon and we were back on the road after the news, coffee and sunrise.
My first planned event is in a couple of days at Crystal River, Fla. for a rally, so I took Florida State Road 55 South, which is very pretty. Then, at a midmorning pit stop, I decided to head east to Montgomery, Ala. for Martin Luther King Day. I crossed the Natchez Trace, which I enjoyed driving a couple of years ago, and some gorgeous countryside filled with tall pines, cypress trees and lovely farms. I crossed the Tallahatchie River (remember the song?) and Talladega. I saw Bubba’s and Boss Hog’s. I am back in the land of green grass! I sort of like to meander.
We found a nice little RV park this afternoon, and here I sit, a little bummed after watching the Green Bay Packers lose. Sigh. Last time I was on a trip, I watched the Kansas City Royals lose the World Series. But hey! It's so cool to be able to drive my house with the TV in it so I can support my teams.
People always want to know where I'm going on these road trips, and sometimes I do have planned stops. But the truth is, as soon as I leave my driveway, I'm here.
