From the Adirondacks – Lake George, NY

We're still enjoying the magnificent Adirondack region of upstate New York, where we've been for a couple weeks now researching for one of our future Seven Day Adventure Guide ebooks.

Our weekly Ask Us Anything show on You Tube last night came to you from Lake George, NY, where we thought we'd be moochdocking at the home of Bill and Pam Roberts. Well, actually, the RV is now sitting on a lot the Roberts have across the street here, Jen and I (and Bo) are staying in a beautiful guest cottage the Roberts have right on the lake.

The rain has been an almost daily occurrence for us out here. We did our live feed last night from the covered front porch of the cottage, answering lots of questions about the time everything was stolen out of our RV while on Route 66 a few years ago. And that morphed into a discussion of our trip from hell that year when Jennifer later got food poisoning in Missouri, slipped and twisted her ankle in Arizona and had to be hospitalized in Montana for bacterial pneumonia. Oh yeah, and the dog died (Tai, the Norwegian Elkhound we had before Bo). 

It was quite the tale of woe. Kind if like a bad country song, as a couple of viewers if the live stream commented.

But the point of the whole story was that stuff happens in life, to all of us, whether you are in an RV or not, and you either deal with it and continue on the best you can or you don't.

We chose the former and like last night's rain has ended and it is a beautiful sunny day today, there's always more good than bad and lots to be thankful for.

We also shared all the places here in the Adirondacks that we've been exploring, the various places where we've camped and boondocked and our on and off battles with mosquitos and biting black flies.

There are so many beautiful spots here in the ADK. Lake George is a delightful town of about 3,500 residents and lots of seasonal tourists. It sits on a long, clean, deep lake of the same name. On the shore, the Fort William Henry Museum is a restored British fort, built in 1755. Nearby, Million Dollar Beach has picnic areas and a boat launch. The Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway offers views of the lake and the Adirondack High Peaks.

The lake itself is considered by many to be the crown jewel in an Adirondacks,  recently named to a list of the Top 10 Clearest Lakes in the U.S. According to the Lake George Association and New York State, the water in Lake George is grade AA-special (scientific for a potable – or okay to drink – water supply). Surrounded by mountains that have allowed very little large-scale development or farming, the lake has, thus far, not suffered from the same amounts of harmful runoff as its neighbors, where greater amounts of urbanization and agriculture have had an impact.

It is 32 miles long, 2 miles wide, has a maximum depth of nearly 200 feet and it has over 170 small islands.

After enjoying the rest if the day here on Lake George, we're moving on to the Finger Lakes region of New York, where we plan to check out some of the beautiful wineries and places to camp and boondock.
