5 Warm Weather Road Trips for Winter RVing

| Updated Oct 15, 2019

If simply reading a headline containing any variation on “potentially historic October winter storm” is enough to send shivers down your spine BEFORE you've even had a chance to put away your lawnmower and summer patio furniture for the year, rest easy.

With a road trip to the southern part of the U.S., you can still use your RV during the forthcoming winter months that seem especially long in the northern part of the country.

Of course there are many great destinations for winter road trips, but The News Wheel, a digital automotive magazine, recently put together a blog post called “5 Warm-Weather Road Trip Destinations for Winter Travelers.”

Now I realize that OFFICIALLY winter is still a ways down the road, however, dropping temps and early season snowfall might have you thinking about such trips sooner than ever.

That's why I made it easy and put The News Wheel's noticeably-Florida-devoid list below. (As always, I'd love your feedback on the best road trip destinations for winter travelers, especially those areas that might be not quite as popular.)

Biloxi, Mississippi

Biloxi boasts mild winter temperatures that make a variety of outdoor activities and indoor diversions more accessible. During winter, the average high temperature ranges from 60-63 degrees in the region. You can kayak on the bayou, walk along the gulf coast, or do stuff like sample new beers at the Biloxi Brewing Company. Casino fans won't have trouble finding something to do, or you can recharge your creativity at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

Sedona, Arizona

Cosmic camping in Sedona.

Sedona is a great place to hang out and soak up the new age vibes, as well as the magnificent scenery of the Mogollon Rim  and Oak Creek Canyon. (Check out this previous RV Lifestyle report on RVing in the area.) RVers can take advantage of Sedona’s average winter temperatures that range from 57-61 degrees. As RV Lifestyle previously reported, Arizona is generally great for stargazing. Depending on when you visit, you might also catch the Sedona Yoga Festival, RunSedona, and/or Sedona International Film Festival and Workshop events.

Las Cruces, New Mexico

From December through February, the average high temperature in Las Cruces ranges from 58-64 degrees. Visitors can go horseback riding at the Corralitos Ranch. Local artisans and fresh produce is found aplenty from the town’s Saturday market. You can also check out Prehistoric Trackways National Monument to witness petrified wood samples, fossilized plants, and a variety of preserved animal footprints. And, per an RV Lifestyle contributor, Las Cruces also boasts “the cleanest KOA ever.”

Orange Beach, Alabama

Another respite from the season’s cold can be found in Orange Beach, Alabama, where the average winter temperature stays in the 60- to 65-degree range. Fishing and yachting are popular attractions, along with kayaking or paddleboarding if you prefer to get as close to the water as possible. Adventure Island has a go-kart track, laser tag, bumper boats, paddle boats, mini-golf course and an arcade, although this amusement center's signature attraction is a five-story volcano exhibit that “erupts” during show times.. Or check out a private boat tour for a chance to see and learn more about the dolphins, sea turtles, and pelicans that call this habitat home.

St. Helena Island, North Carolina

St. Helena Island in South Carolina is yet another place to soak in 60- to 66-degree temperatures in the winter. Crowds are virtually non-existent, making it a great place to unwind and soak up some solitude to recharge. Horseback riding is popular on the island. Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort offers golfing and tennis. Historic sites like Chapel of Ease and Penn Center can be found. And there are also some great seafood offerings.

It seems like y’all talk a lot, but don’t say much. Not just this one but most of your posts and blogs.
