The 2017 Schedule of Roadtreking Gatherings

The 2017 Schedule of Roadtreking Gatherings

We're ready to announce the dates, locations and themes of the 2017 schedule of Roadtreking gatherings.

Again, these are not rallies. They are small, informal gatherings built around activities, hiking, photography, exploring, socializing and great campfires. We try to limit them to no more than 50 people or so each, so we can all get to know each other. Because of that, they always sell out, usually with a waiting list.

While details are not yet firm on all of them, we thought we'd better get the dates out so those interested can put them on their calendars. We've once again tried to hit several different regions of the country and we'll have more to say about them in the weeks ahead. But for now, here's what we have:

January 20-22:  January Freezeout, Tahquamenon State Park, Michigan

This is our third annual winter campout in Michigan's snow-covered Upper Peninsula. Getting a camping place is a two-step procedure:

First, go to the Michigan DNR website and reserve a spot at Taquamenon State Park for the weekend of January 20 – January 22.

Second, go to this Eventbrite registration page and resister. You pay your fee with the DNR. Register with Eventbrite to officially be part of our group. On Eventbrite, tell us the site number you have booked with the DNR so we know where you are.

This trip is one of our most popular. There's usualy anywhere from two to three feet of snow on the ground.

The Michigan DNR rangers plow sites for us.

There’s no real agenda and no plan.  Just show up with your winter gear and have fun. There’s snowshoeing, hiking, photography, snowmobiling, sight-seeing and lots and lots of fun socializing. We’ll have a guided snowshoe hike on Saturday morning. It’s just like summer camping, except we wear lots of clothing.

Here's a story, with photos, about what to expect –

March 15-17: Bataan Memorial Death March, White Sands, NM

This is a very special event commemorating the Bataan Death March. Yan Seiner did this last year and returns in 2017.  Roadtrek sponsors the event and provides transportion to the survivors.  We're looking for people who want to participate. There will be signup details posted later.

For info on the march, go to

June 19-23: Roadtreking’s Photo Safari, Glacier National Park (Chewing Blackbones Campground)

The June Photo Safari is our premier Roadtreking event of the year. We will have photo classes taught by pros, opportunities to hike and see and photograph wildlife in what many believe is the most scenic of America's National Parks.

Plus for this event  this year, we will have a very special campfire program by renowned storyteller Jack Gladstone. We'll be headquartered at the Chewing Blackbones RV Park and Campground located on the east shore of beautiful St. Mary's lake on the Blackfeet Reservation, six miles north of the St. Mary's entrance to Glacier National Park and 12 miles south of the Canadian border. The campground does offer full hookups. We provide a boondocking spot with your reservation. If you want hookups, the campground will charge you an extra fee.

We'll provide a Blackfeet dinner one of the nights, with bison and local veggies.

This will sell out so we will be releasing tickets in small batches. Here's the link to reserve your spot. Please don't sign up unless you are sure you will attend.

August 18-22: Pacific Northwest Gettogether and Solar Eclipse, John Day, OR

We will be located just east of Prairie City in Oregon, almost directly on the centerline of this magnificent solar event. The eclipse will occur at 10:24 AM on August 21st.

Eastern Oregon offers some of the best chances for a clear, cloudless sky, and Prairie City is about as close to the centerline as you can get

Room for 40 RVs… details to be announced later but you can reserve your spot via Evenbrite by clicking this link

This gathering will be four nights and we will have an astronomer on hand. There will be cookouts

September 14-18: Blues and BBQ, Tupelo, Mississippi – Trace State Park

This event takes us to the Deep South and a red-hot Blues and BBQ week in the birthplace of Elvis Presley!

We will be camped right at Trace State Park nearby Natchez Trace so plan your trip to include a drive down that highway.

As is our custom, on Thursday we have an informal social, where you BYO whatever.

You have the days to explore Tupelo, the Natchez Trace, and generally have a good time in the area.

We start the weekend off with Adam Gussow.  Adam is on tap on Friday night as one half of the Blues Doctors.  Adam is one of the leading players of blues harmonica.  He will be offering a class in blues harmonica, so bring your harp.  Adam will have his latest CD for sale.  You can order it when you buy your ticket and pick it up when you meet Adam.

On Saturday we have a Mississippi BBQ dinner.  Pulled pork, done southern style.

We have Miranda Luise lined up to perform on Sunday.  You will have a chance to get up on stage and play the blues with one of the great blues singers.  Miranda has been featured on NPR. Check her out at   Miranda will have her latest CD, Delta III, for sale, and you can buy it here when you sign up and pick it up at the gettogether.

October 2-6:  Fall Foliage Tour, Shawangunks, NY (TENTATIVE DATES)

This is still being set but the trees should be in full color and we'll be in New York's Shawangunks Mountains Region, which is a range that is a continuation of the ridge that is known as Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania and Kittatinny Mountain in New Jersey. It reaches from the New York-New Jersey line northeast to Rosendale. Referred to affectionately by hikers and climbers as the “Gunks,” the region offers a hiking experience of great variety and beauty.

So there you have it. We'll have more to say abut all of these here on the blog and on our Roadtreking Facebook Group.

Looking forward to 2017!
